Disease Prevention

Dutch Elm Disease
Elm trees are inspected during the growing season for any signs of Dutch Elm Disease (D.E.D.) These signs include flagging in the tree canopy (discolored or dying leaves on a particular branch) and streaking in the cambial layer of the tree.

Trees diagnosed with D.E.D. are tagged and removed at the earliest possible date.

The City will remove boulevard trees affected by Dutch Elm Disease, however the property owner is responsible for privately-owned trees.
Please do not store any elm wood with bark attached, as elm firewood harbors the elm bark beetle.
For more information about the local ordinance, see Chapter 16, Article 4 at this link.

Emerald Ash Borer
The City of Mandan is urging all citizens to keep a vigilant eye for green ash tree problems (signs of bore holes in the tree and tree dieback). E.A.B. has been found in North Dakota, 9 mines north of Edgeley in LaMoure County. Insecticide treatment isn't recommended until infestations are within 15 miles of your location.

This disease has the capability to kill all ash trees in a community.
Do not move firewood between cities or states, because this bug is likely to enter the state in infected ash trees or firewood.
