Water Distribution

The city of Mandan has 137 miles of water mains and 1,362 fire hydrants.

The maintenance of these water utilities is the responsibility of the utility department. Water main replacement projects are done annually to replace old water mains, but occasional breaks do occur and need to be fixed. Other preventive maintenance includes valve exercising and repair and annual hydrant flushing and repair.

Hydrant Flushing - Fire hydrants are flushed in the spring and fall to make sure they are working properly and to maintain the quality of the water supply by flushing out any sediment and rust and bringing fresh water into the ends of distribution lines. As part of this hydrant flushing process, you may notice rusty water in your water lines. If this happens, run water in a bathtub or outside water spigot until the water clears up. Please call 701-667-3240 with questions.

To report a potential water main break, please call the utility department 701-667-3240.

Emergencies after hours, weekends and holidays, please call the Mandan Police department at 701-667-3250.
