If I Were Mayor Essay Contest

Each spring, the City of Mandan joins with the North Dakota League of Cities (NDLC) in their "If I Were Mayor" Essay Contest. This contest encourages young people to think about public service and future community leadership.

The contest is open to any third and seventh grade student living in North Dakota. Each grade will be judged separately. Students may submit essays through a teacher or on their own and not through their school. 

 

NDLC Essay Contest Winners. NDLC essay winners will be announced in conjunction with City Government Week in April. NDLC "If I Were Mayor" essay contest winners will receive a $150 cash prize and have their essays featured in the League's publication, CITYScan. Mandan Essay Contest Winners. The City of Mandan will select two contest winners from local submissions to the contest. Mandan’s winners will be invited to participate in a spring City Commission meeting, and their classes will receive a visit with the mayor and donuts! 

 

Essay contest rules & information

Deadline: March 14, 2025

Requirements for Teachers (submitting essays from a class): Teachers must include the student’s name, school, and teacher’s name.

Requirements for Individual Students (submitting an essay outside of school): Individual students must include the student’s name, address, parent’s name, and phone number.

  • Essays must be original work of third and seventh graders in North Dakota schools or home schools. 
  • Essays may be typed. 
  • Multiple entries from the same student will not be accepted. 
  • Essays should be no longer than one page in length and must answer the following questions: 
    • Why is Mandan great - what makes it special?
    • What would you do to improve Mandan if you were mayor? 
  • Essays may deal with community issues. Originality of thought and creativity will be considered.
