School Zone Speed Limits Changing to 20 mph
Sept. 21, 2026 —The speed limit in school zones throughout the city of Mandan will soon increase from 15 mph to 20 mph. The change is intended to create consistency across all school zones, as some currently have a 15 mph speed limit while others are already posted at 20 mph. Once implemented, all school zones within the city will have a uniform speed limit.
While this change reflects an increase in the posted speed limit, student and pedestrian safety remains the top priority.
“Speed limits matching the physical characteristics of the roadway will result in higher compliance,” says City Engineer Jarek Wigness “There will be less speed variation between vehicles. Turning onto or crossing roads in school zones will be safer because the gaps between vehicles will be more predictable.”
What’s changing?
- All school zone speed limits will be 20 mph.
- Updated signs will be installed in school zones.
The new speed limit will take effect as soon as the signs are posted. Updated signage will be in place on or before Oct. 15
School zones remain areas where extra caution is required. Drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
