Fire Department to Host Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
Sept. 10, 2024 – The Mandan Fire Department will honor the bravery and sacrifice of the firefighters and first responders who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, by hosting the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the Starion Sports Complex located at 111 Old Red Trail, Mandan. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:45 a.m. with the climb commencing at 10 a.m. This event is open to the public, who are invited to join in remembering and honoring the fallen heroes.
The stair climb is a symbolic way for participants to remember the 343 FDNY firefighters, paramedics, and officers who courageously ascended the towers to save lives, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice. Climbers will ascend the equivalent of 110 stories, the height of the World Trade Center towers.
"The 9/11 Stair Climb is not only a tribute to the firefighters who gave their lives 23 years ago but also a reflection of the spirit of service that defines our profession,” says Battalion Chief Shane Weltikol. “We climb to honor those who climbed before us and to remind ourselves of the importance of courage, unity, and resilience.”
Proceeds from the stair climb will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), an organization that provides support to the families of fallen firefighters and works to reduce firefighter deaths in the line of duty.
Pre-registration online is closed, however, participants may sign up on-site beginning at 9 a.m. The event is open to individuals of all fitness levels, with participants encouraged to climb or walk the track at their own pace.
