MFD Completes Fuel Tank Explosion Investigation

Jan. 20, 2026 – The Mandan Fire Department has completed its investigation into the fuel tank explosion that occurred Jan. 10, 2026 at the Gray Oil facility in Mandan. 

Based on the information obtained during the investigation, the incident was determined to be accidental in nature and occurred while hot work was being performed in the vicinity of one of the tanks within a nine-tank system. The event was isolated to a single tank. 

Investigators determined that work on the tank had been ongoing throughout the week leading up to the incident. 

As a result of the incident, six buildings sustained varying degrees of damage. During the event, the tank lid was displaced approximately 340 feet from its original location. 

The Mandan Fire Department has documented its findings and shared them with facility representatives. Any repairs, corrective actions, or operational changes moving forward will be addressed by the property owner and appropriate authorities.
