Fire Department Conducting Live Fire Training Inside Former Mandan High School Building
Sept. 23, 2025 –The former Mandan High School building will have one last opportunity to educate within its walls. Mandan City Fire Department will be conducting live fire training inside the old high school building tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 23, beginning at 6 p.m. The department is utilizing the building for fire suppression training for department staff.
The public may see fire trucks, smoke, and possibly fire during the training. Department training staff will conduct the training in accordance with a detailed training plan and applicable codes. The building will not be burnt down, and the training burns will be contained to interior rooms in accordance with Mandan Fire Department’s burn plan.
“The ability to train in a live fire environment in a large space will provide an invaluable opportunity to learn in an atmosphere that we don’t have the facilities to simulate on a regular basis,” says Fire Chief Mitch Bitz.
Fire lines and some street closures may be in place for safety, and every effort will be taken to minimize impacts during the training. Residents may watch, provided they respect closure areas.
Questions regarding this training should be directed to Battalion Chief Shane Weltikol via email. The fire department is looking forward to the opportunity to improve performance through this valuable training opportunity and wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the Mandan Public School District for their use of the facility.
