Building Murals

On December 3, 2019, Mandan City Commission passed Ordinance 1326 related to murals. A permit is required for any new mural application proposing a mural viewable from any public street, trail, park, or other right-of-way. A mural applicant may submit a complete application and any necessary non-refundable application fee and shall await receipt of the permit prior to beginning work applying the proposed mural to the structure. Backyard Chickens 

On March 5, 2019, Mandan City Commission passed Ordinance 1306 related to backyard chickens. A permit for backyard chickens is necessary and specific requirements must be met in order to keep backyard chickens in city limits. Restrictions include, but are not limited to:

• No more than four hens
• No roosters
• The coop and run must be kept 10' from the property line and 20' from adjacent dwellings

Fireworks Stands

On March 5, 2019, Mandan City Commission passed Ordinance 1291 related to Fireworks Stands. A temporary use permit is required in order to sell fireworks in the 2 mile extraterritorial zone outside Mandan city limits. Standards include, but are not limited to:

  •  Being wholly contained within a trailer, tent, building or other structure, whether permanent or temporary

  •  Holding a fireworks sales permit as issued by the City of Mandan and a state retailer license

  •  Having a minimum 1,600 sq.ft. area dedicated for customer parking. Additional parking may be required

  •  Having a minimum 500 ft. setback from all flammable and hazardous material storage areas and structures

Outdoor Seating and Display Areas in the Right-of-Way

A person owning, operating, or managing a business may apply for an outdoor seating area or outdoor display area permit on a form approved by the city.
